Are you wondering just which batting to use in that garment? Well the pros use the
Fairfield
cotton classic batting. We often split the layers of batting if we want the garment to have just enough for quilting but not add any stiffness to the garment. This batting is really 80 per cent cotton and 20 per cent poly. The 80 percent cotton allows the garment to have warmth and the 20 per cent poly allows the cotton to hold its shape. Most of the poly is in the scrim which is a layer or webbing of poly over the cotton classic batting. It is on both sides and that is one of the reasons we can get a hold of it so well and peal it apart. We really love the Fairfield Cotton Classic. Remember that it comes in pre cut pieces in a carton in many sizes, but I find the Queen size batting the most convenient. This Fairfield Cotton Classic Batting is good for hand quilting or for machine quilting and for longarm quilting.

Natural Cotton unbleached batting is the one that quilters use when they are pure cotton lovers. Many quilters believe that if the fabric is 100 per cent cotton, the batting should be the same. Fairfield Low-Loft Poly Batting is the poly that we use in those quilts that are washed so much. This thin poly batting is easy to use and gives a slight loft. We can get this poly into a hoop easily for hand quilting or we can get quite a large quilt under the needle of a regular sewing machine because of the thickness. Fairfield Extra Loft Poly batting or sometimes called Fairfield High Loft batting I use for several purposes. I use it for tied quilts. That old English comforter look is achieved by using 2 or three layers of this Extra-Loft batting. You can either tie through the layered bats or you can stitch a small tack or circle to hole the layers together and then on the stitched quilts you can still tie a decorative ribbon or yarn through the stitching to add a touch of embellishment to the comforter. Fairfield Extra Loft Poly battings can be hand stitched but due to the thickness we find it a little more difficult. We really recommend the machine quilting or longarm quilting for the Fairfield Extra Loft Poly batting.
